Global Climate Change/ Warming- Sign of the End? ( Psalm 46:1-3)
/10/09/2022
" God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will we not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with swelling thereof," Psalm 46:1-3 ( KJV)
INTRODUCTION
A. A modern problem, not specifically mentioned in the Bible, is global climate change/warming.
1. Many believe that this phenomenon is an evidence or sign of end of the world?
2. Is this true? What does the Bible say about this? Let us know the truth, John 8:32
B. Our approach in this lesson shall be as follows:
1. Meanings of Global Climate Change/Warming
2. What are the Causes of Global Climate Change/Warming?
3. Our Christian Response to Global Climate Change/Warming
DISCUSSION
A. Meanings of Global Climate Change/Warming ( NASA)
1. Climate Change " encompasses global warming but refers to the broader range of changes happening to our planet including...
a. Rising sea levels
b. Shrinking mountain glaciers
c. Accelerating ice melting in Greenland, Antartica and the Artic
d. Shifts in flower and plant blooming times"
2. Global Warming " long term heating of the earth's climate system observed since the pre- industrial period ( 1850-1900) due to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in the Earth's atmosphere."
B. Causes of Global Climate Change/Warming
1. " Greenhouse gas emissions blanket the Earth and leads to global warming and climate change." UN
- the Earth is now warming faster than at any point in history.
2. Generating Power- " generating electricity and heat by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas causes global emissions."
- most electricity is still produced from fossil fuels
- only a quarter ( 1/4) comes from wind, solar and other renewable energies
3. Manufacturing Goods "manufacturing and industry produce emissions from burning fossil fuels"
- energy is needed to produce cement, iron, steel, electronics, plastics, clothes and other goods
- mining and other industrial processes release gases
4. Cutting Down Forests- to create farms, pastures and other reasons causes emissions
- cut trees releases stored carbon
- forests absorb carbon dioxide
- destroying them limits nature's ability to keep emissions out of the atmosphere
C. Christian's Response to Global Climate Change/Warning
1. Take care of the Earth as part of God's creation
a. God commanded Adam and Eve to subdue the Earth and have dominion over His creation, Genesis 1:28
- using the world's resources for his survival and for God's creation
- man is steward of all God's creation
b. " Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth," Matthew 5:5
2. Be prepared for the day God will destroy this earth by fire, 2 Peter 3:7, 10
- " after the tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of heaven will be shaken," Matthew 24:29
- this will take place when the Son of Man returns to this Earth, Matthew 24:30
- no one knows when this prophecy will be fulfilled, Matthew 24:36
- some scientists believe that global warning and its effects will soon happen
3. Make this created Earth as " instruments of God's righteousness" Romans 6:13
- " You have given ( man) dominion over the works of Your hands, You have put all things under his feet," Psalm 8:6
- as instruments of Christ- exalting righteousness
- and not worshipping God's creation, but the Creator Himself, Romans 1:25
Pagans worshipped the Sun, the Moon, the Nile River, etc
- " all things were created by Him ( Christ) through Him and for Him, Colossians 1:16-17
CONCLUSION
A. As the Earth and our Physical Bodies are temporary, we should look for " eternal things."
1. " Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away," Matthew 24:35
2. " We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal," 2 Corinthians 4:18
B. To be sure that we shall receive the crown of life, Revelation 2:10
1. Believe and be baptized to be saved, Mark 16:16
2. Repent and be baptized to be forgiven of sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, Acts 2:38
3. Christ is extending His great invitation in Matrhew 11:28-30
4. Now is the time, the day of your salvation, 2 Corinthians 6:2
