Prayers for Political Leaders- Why? ( I Timothy 2:1-4)

"I exhort those supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God, our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth," Apostle Paul, I Timothy 2:1-4

 A. Election comes, soon fresh mandates and new political leaders

 1. Add prayers to our rights to vote

 B. The approach in this lesson

Discussion

 A. Mild command to pray for kings/others

  1.Supplications (Greek " deeseis" Latin " supplicare") plead humbly, appeal, beg

   - Prayers (Greek " proseuches") communion/talking with God, our Father

   -Petitions (Greek " enteuxis") formal requests as in courts, intercessions

   -Giving of thanks (Greek " eucharistias") to God for His greatness, provisions and access

  2.Command connected with Romans 13:1 "God approves human governments"

  3. Quezon " Have faith in the Divine Providence who guides the destinies of men and nations."

B. Reasons for Paul's mild command

 1. " to have a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty"

   a. Matthew 5:9 " Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God."

  b. Dispel Rome's suspicions that Christians were " troublemakers/rebels," Acts 17:6

C. Good and acceptable in God's sight- why?

  1. He wills that all men be saved, John 3:16

  2. That they will come to the knowledge of the truth, John 14:6; 17:17

  3. Know and do God's will to enter His kingdom, Matthew 7:21

  4.God's will is our sanctification, I Thessalonians 4:3

C. How prayers can/will present/future political leaders?

  1.God arranges events/people to let things happen

   a. Joseph- from son to slave- Prince of Egypt

   b. Phillip- brought by Holy Spirit to teach Ethiopian eunuch

   c. Daniel and his three friends were rescued by angels

  2. James 5:16 " effectual and fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much."

    a. God shook the house where saints prayed, Acts 4:31

    b. An angel released the apostles from prison, Acts 5:19; 12:17

Conclusion

 A. William Tyndale " Open the eyes of the King of England."

  1.Pray for kings/others to know/obey the gospel 

  2.Paul persuaded Agrippa to become a Christian, Acts 26:27-29

B. God does NOT listen to sinners, John 9:31

   1.Christ invites you to come to Him, Matthew 11:28-30

   2. " Now is the day of salvation," 2 Corinthians 6:2
